Howard Silverstein teaches aerobics and line dancing classes at the Myerberg.

Howard has always enjoyed teaching. His introduction to teaching was helping the third graders with their studies after school. “What a tremendous joy one gets from encouraging others and giving back to a community.”

His next step was to be a waiter at the famous Pimlico Hotel. There he met many movie stars and Baltimore’s movers and shakers. Next, he was a dance instructor at Fred Astaire Dance Studio where Howard learned dance from the experts but more importantly, honed his skills as a teacher. On the weekends, he was a disc jockey at local clubs. The two separate jobs satisfied Howard’s love of teaching and his passion for music.

Howard has always had an interest in fitness which led him to take classes at The Bare Hills Fitness and Tennis Club. There his passion for fitness ignited. In short order, he was teaching those very classes and learning about the science of fitness from experts at the club. It was a natural transition to becoming an entrepreneur. Taking everything Howard learned to create his classes that combined fitness, music and dance he built his business working at many Baltimore senior centers, specializing and combining fitness and fun for seniors. At the Myerberg Center, where Howard has been teaching for 24 years, he truly is at home. He feels like the members and staff are his family and friends. Howard considers himself lucky because as his mother said, “Find a job that you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
